Hello!
Our bodies are incredible, don’t you agree?
The way they fight invaders, heal on their own, the way each system helps one another, the way we think and dream, and the way we move. And that is just a minuscule bit of what the human body can do. Today I want to look at movement and why we are meant to move.
Since ending my year and starting 2022 with covid and doing nothing but sleeping most of the first 35 hours since being hit with this virus. I was laying down, barely moving. On day 3 is when I realized my hips were sore and my legs felt restless. My glutes and lower back were beginning to feel sore. And that’s when it dawned on me. I haven’t walked my usual daily walk for days let alone moved much. And my next thought was all those who complain about stiff muscles and joints are not moving enough.
Movement does not have to be sprints and hurdles. Start where your body is comfortable. Walking is one of the best exercises because its easy on the joints, you can increase intensity, stride and speed to give you a total body workout.
When you move your body you:
make your heart work which helps circulate blood & lymph
increase brain activity
create denser bones
regulate digestion and elimination
increase balance and stability of the whole body
improve mobility
and so much more!
But what happens when we don’t move is … rather scary. We always talk of the “benefits” of exercise or eating well but lets also look at what happens when we don’t move because it is reading this that may get you to start moving. That is my wish for you… read on.
When you don’t move your body you:
stagnate blood and lymph cannot move as well
your heart muscle like all other muscles grow weak
your lungs do not expand and contract enough leaving shallow breaths which can lead to a host of other issues
cause an imbalance with muscles. shortened muscles cause a decrease in range of motion, poor posture, your gait will be off which will lead to a chain of events throughout your body
your digestion and elimination do not work well- holding in all that toxic waste
there is so much more such as blood pressure, heart disease and other systems or organs that will slow down
Who’s leaping up to walk around the house right now? I am!
My favorite self-motivating moving tool in the whole wide world (besides Sporty!) that is affordable to everyone is a…
Smart watch/ fitness watch/ pedometer
Right now I have a Garmin Forerunner 35 and the one thing I love about it is it tells me when to “MOVE”. It’s simple. Easy to navigate. And priced right. It counts steps, shows heart rate as well as average resting heart rate, weather, and you can include emails or text messages if you desire. It does more or research on their website of what you require from your fitness tracker.
As most know #3 of The 5 Basics is MOVE THAT BODY!
